Jon Por Birgisson (Jonsi)

One band i'm yet to see, and I doubt it will ever happen because we are as isolated in our little city as they are in theirs, is Sigur Ros. It would seem their native home of Iceland plays a useful metaphor for their sound, with atmospheric soundscapes of floating guitars, ethereal melodies and the amazing falsetto voice of Jonsi, all orchestrated with the ability of not breaking into the mainstream. They have created something beautiful, that no others have been able to mimic.

Vonlenska is the term used by Jonsi to describe the unintelligible lyrics that are sung throughout many of the songs. This is what I love about their music, it lets you create your own nostalgic meaning behind the wordplay. They had much acclaim with their release of Með Suð í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust (With a Buzz In Our Ears We Play Endlessly), and have a new record scheduled for release sometime in 2010, quoted to be less My Bloody Valentine-ish and more minimalist. However Jonsi's talents thankfully do not stop at Sigur Ros. He has been working recently with partner Alex Sommers (of Parachutes) under the guise Riceboy Sleeps, releasing a 9 track record under the same name.

Now its been reported Jonsi is about to release a solo album in 2010. Without fail it should be beautiful. Here is the first track to be released where he actually sings in English.

We Love Crookers

Crookers have never amazed me, their sound similar to a box of nails being thrown in a washing machine. But their new album Tons of Friends sees them teaming up with some incredible artists over its 20 tracks. To name a few Soulwax, Spank Rock, Rye Rye, Yelle, Miike Snow, Drop the Lime, Major Lazer...

This album will be massive, and it drops March 8th

Two Door Cinema Club

Being backed by Kitsune, there is the immediate idea that Two Door Cinema Club will have instantaneous musical appeal. The Irish three piece have set their feet firmly in the electro indie world, even though it seems like it is being completely overrun as of late. Poppy enough to please the masses, but alternative enough to please the indie kids. They walk along a unique line.

New Releases

This is the new track from indie rockers Citay, from their forthcoming album Dream Get Together.

Its been around for a while now, but the album from Rain Machine, fronted by TV On The Radio lead vocalist Kyp Malone, is just incredible. It will definitely be one of the best releases this year. Less poppy than TVOTR, it allows Kyp to express himself much more as an artist, with large political undertones and stark realizations. Just listen to the lyrics. Especially for the track Smiling Black Faces.

Baltimore duo Beach House have their new album Teen Dream scheduled for release in January under Sub Pop. This new record was a complete change in direction for the pair.

“We’re the same people, but this record has changed our directions. We were forced to let go of people and things we were holding onto as individuals: normalcy, daily rituals, the ability to take care of ourselves. We were dropped into a wilderness, but we had more clarity than we’ve ever had before.”

Holed up in a converted church in New York for a month can create amazing things.

Warpaint

The XX brought the minimalist sound, and Warpaint have taken it further. Like fireworks and colored forests.

Label Series: Marine Parade

Marine Parade is an independent label established by DJ/Producer Adam Freeland in 1998. This label has made a name for itself through the discovery of some of the worlds greatest up and coming electronic artists.

"New electronic sounds... and beyond" - Marine Parade

I would have to say, Marine Parade and Valerie would have to be my favourite independent labels at this time, with music that ranges from iconic DJ anthems to in-depth electronic brilliance.

PIAF 2010

The lineup for the Perth International Arts Festival was announced the other week, and after seeing the incredibly visual performance by Of Montreal last time, its going to be even better with Pains of Being Pure at Heart and HEALTH coming to greet our little city in the corner of the world.

Youthful delusions of grandeur are hardly delusions for Pains of Being Pure at Heart. The visceral vocal melodies floating above My Bloody Valentine guitar washes ringing with the hooks of The Shins will haunt you for weeks. For some it may come as an 80's indie-pop revivalist album, but their panache has created something beautiful. Their 15 minute self titled EP has been hailed with nothing but acclaim, and in your nostalgia driven daydreams, this will be the soundtrack.

Like a new box of Lego thrown hastily out of the box, Pivot dismantle the framework of progressive music, and create a sound so complex and delicate it spurs you into a state of reverie.

Everyone should have heard of HEALTH's collaboration with Canadian mind-fuck Crystal Castles, and their track Crimewave, but this is something else. Heavy synths with harmonic vocals.

The festival runs from February 5th to March 1st.

BEAT!BEAT!BEAT!

I've always wanted to hear a song about fireworks, and Beat!Beat!Beat!, Germany's answer to The Foals, made it just right.

Lifelike

Lifelike is quickly becoming one of the most sought after producers in the French house scene. Like Alice falling down the rabbit hole, something bizarre and strange happens to the tracks he remasters. After climbing onboard Alan Braxe's label Vulture, Empire of the Sun, Chromeo, La Roux, and so many other major artists have been trying to secure his unique touch. Recently, the French pop-rock group The Plastiscines had their anthemic Barcelona reworked, and it seems that without his help, they wouldn't have received any press with their low grade 'i'm a bitch, b-i-t-c-h' lyrics screaming out over simple hooks and even simpler sounds.

Friend and part-producer Kris Menace claims that their sound comes from the rise of French disco, with heavy bass lines and the rough, pre-Daft Punk house. This track was one of their first collaborations, but man it is good.

And this track is just rad.

Who's afraid of Cornelius?

Ayyyyooo! John Roman!
The 20 year old student hailing from Toronto has been able to establish himself as a quality up and coming producer, remixing such artists as The Bloody Beetroots and Boys Noize as well as creating some tunes himself. Combining studies and music has proven hard but achievable with the young producer touring the USA and Europe during semester breaks!
A definite young talent to look for in the future.

"If there's one producer who hasn't been getting the hype he deserves this year, it's John Roman..." - GottaDanceDirty

Fenech Soler

Remember the hype surrounding the emergence of the new electro-pop/rock era? Cut Copy, Van She, Friendly Fires etc making headlines with borrowed nostalgia from the 80's? Suppose you take everything you love about these artists, throw in some youthful optimism, some creative genius, and turn it on its head into the present.

Your left with four boys who hide under the guise Fenech Soler. The UK lads have been receiving some incredible press recently, with some regarding them as 'the future of white dance-floor-scorching electro-funk', while destroying the European festival scene. Yet they're still unsigned and barely out of their teens.

Keep an ear out for them, big things will surely be coming.

The Twelves

The Twelves have just dropped their new remix, this time of Fever Ray's 'Seven'. Bold Brazilian funk.

The Horrors

The Horrors have come a long long way since their first self-titled EP, which offered so much with their nihilistic, post-punk sound. Their latest album 'Primary Colors' brought them a new found hype with many labeling them the next Joy Division, and after seeing them at Glastonbury this year I couldn't agree more.

Their new single 'Whole New Way' was originally meant to be a Japan only b-side release, but Albran's thoughts of re-recording it at his Studio 13 turned out to be pretty fucking smart. They're on the bill for Big Day Out this year, and anyone that was lucky enough to get a ticket should definitely consider seeing them.

Impressing even more, they have been dropping a few remixes over the months between their tour dates. Their take on Memory Tapes 'Bicycle' is one melancholic, down-tempo daydream that sounds like a summer thunderstorm.

El Ten Eleven

El Ten Eleven from California, USA, depict post-rock at its finest. It's Ratatat-like rhythm proves to immerse listeners. A mixture of guitar/bass and the utilization of electrical-drums and acoustics combining to produce a technically impressive mixture of music! Puts Ratatat to shame..
